Foil In A Spray Can

It's that time of year when we start planning my daughter's dorm room decor.  This year she decided she wanted to do a copy cat of Spencer's room from the ABC Family show, Pretty Little Liars.   The TV room uses a mirrored side table.  After shopping around, my daughter decided she didn't want to pay the price for a mirrored piece.  Instead, we decided to do something reflective, but not mirrored.  I've seen some great pieces in blog land using aluminum foil instead of silver leaf.  We kept this on our idea list, but also headed to Hobby Lobby to check out the spray paints.

Luckily we found Krylon Silver Foil Metallic paint, which was made for multi-surfaces including wood.

This table was painted turquoise last year for the dorm room, and lightly distressed.  We painted it with the foil metallic paint without any additional prep.  If you want a completely smooth surface I would suggest sanding the table with a fine grit paper before painting.    However, my daughter was pleased with how her table turned out.  You can see the reflection of the white pitcher in this picture above.  This is definitely a reflective finish and not just a silver color.

The paint went on very well with great coverage.  The can was much skinnier than the regular size spray paint cans so we bought 2.  Surprisingly 1 can was more than enough, with some left over for another project.  The paint was $5.49 per can and we used a 40% off coupon.

The table is a more "reflective" looking than the pictures show.

We have several more dorm projects to show next week. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Love the hat, too!

  2. Neat! Reminds me of the "modern country" trend right now. I think a collection of silver frames would look cool above it.
